| Miles of Memories started
with the charity work of Lynn Stucker, volunteering her
time to make quilts for hurricane victims. It has grown
to a quilting company whose purpose is to quilt and finish
quilt tops for people all over the world and then to use
the profits to create charity quilts for those in need.
With our workers and volunteers, we aim to continue the
work Lynn Stucker started, creating quilted treasures.
Lynn never dreamed of becoming a quilter or even a sewer.
Her mom Jean was a wonderful seamstress: doing alterations,
making wedding dresses and veils, and after "retirement"she made many doll clothes for her grand-daughters. John
Miles Stucker, Lynn's father was a craftsman building
custom house boats. Lynn Stucker has had a penchant for
embroidery, cross-stitch and needlepoint, but never knew
the ins and outs of a sewing machine.
Several years ago Lynn received a sewing machine for Christmas.
It came with sewing lessons of her choice. She signed up
with Denise Cawley, Pizzazz
Studios, and the sewing bug bit. She couldn't
get enough of fabric, color choices, thread and had a long
list of projects she was working on regularly. (We are sure
you quilters know a lot about those long lists of projects
to work on next.)
Lynn Stucker fueled her addiction to quilts by taking
class after class: thread drawing, advanced thread drawing,
fabric dyeing, complex cloth, and that led to longarm quilting
classes.
Lynn had so many ideas for quilts she wasn't sure what
to do with all her ideas. Then Hurricane Katrina hit. Denise
Cawley and Lynn decided to do something to help. Lynn started
piecing quilt tops. Denise asked all of her quilting students
to donate materials, and quilt tops. Volunteers and quilt
tops started pouring in to Denise's studio. Lynn & Denise
organized several work sessions. Through it all they made
more than 100 quilts for the Salvation Arm to distribute
to displaced families throughout Milwaukee. Each quilt had
a buttoned pocket for the recipient to keep valuables close
to their heart. Additional volunteers filled the pockets
with handwritten notes of encouragement.
In the hundreds of hours devoted to the quilting project,
Lynn Stucker and her volunteers realized there was a need
for a company like Miles of Memories. While many quilts
are made for children in need through Project Linus, few
are made for adults, teenagers, the elderly and even animals
in distress. Miles of Memories quilting services offset
the cost of producing charity quilts for groups otherwise
underserved.
For every quilt a customer has us finish, we donate quilts
in their names to one of the organizations listed in our
links area of our website. Miles
of Memories - Quilted Treasures exists to continue
the process of giving back to the circle of human kind.
This company is called Miles of Memories in honor of Lynn
Stucker's parents: Jean and John Miles Stucker whose
dedication to their crafts fuels the spirit of Miles of
Memories.
